project overview

IN-SITU Kebele is a housing intervention project situated in Addis Ababa’s informal settlements, where traditional Kebele houses are continuously expanded through self-built and incremental construction.

The project proposes a system of low-cost, modular architectural additions that respond directly to on-site conditions. By mapping everyday spatial problems—leaking roofs, unstable structures, overcrowded courtyards—the design introduces adaptable micro-architectures that can be assembled using local materials and family labor, strengthening resilience without erasing community identity.
